Yandle Eyeing Doughty and Weber?

Jun 22

One thing I can promise you...According to sourcs Coyotes D-man Keith Yandle will not sign before July first. He is closely watching the Drew Doughty and Shea Weber negotiations and will not be the first of the three to sign.

Does anyone even know what the Coyotes budget will be? Unfortunately for Phoenix, Yandle didn’t make enough salary last season to go the club elected arbitration route. That would prevent a team from signing Yandle to an offer sheet. Word is Phoenix is not going to keep Ed Jovanovski and they already lost their goaltender. Can they afford to lose Yandle? The obvious answer is no.

It will be interesting to see if there’s a GM out there that would offer sheet a team owned by the NHL? On the positive side, they wouldn’t have to face Phoenix’s Owner at future Board of Governors meetings.

LA is aggressively trying to get Doughty signed to a long-term deal as is Nashville with Weber. I’m told signing Weber long-term will be a challenge as he wants to see some evidence that the Predators are truly trying to win a Stanley Cup moving forward. Otherwise he’ll either wait it out until he’s a UFA or be traded elsewhere.

Yandle will likely use the rules of the CBA to his advantage and seek an offer sheet from an NHL club. For one reason or another, I’m told talks between Phoenix and Yandle have been very quiet.

The San Jose Sharks have given Jamal Mayers permission to seek offers from other teams. This is a class move by GM Doug Wilson who understands veteran players have families they need to get situated and a head start is always appreciated.

I’m told not to expect San Jose to re-sign D-man Ian White or forward Ben Eager. They are trying to re-sign Devin Setoguchi.

Ballard Headed for Waivers?

Vancouver is trying hard to sign both Kevin Bieksa and Christian Erhoff. If the Canucks can’t move Keith Ballard they will likely place him on waivers and eat the contract in the minors. Toronto has done this with Jeff Finger and the Rangers did the same with Wade Redden so it’s not like we haven’t seen this before. Vancouver can afford to eat Ballard’s deal.

Bryzgalov Will Get How Much?

Some of the numbers I’m hearing on Ilya Bryzgalov just seem outrageous to me. I will be surprised if the Flyers sign him for more than $5 million. If he wants to win he should take it.

Mystery team for Jagr?

I know the agent for Jaromir Jagr has told some folks, including myself, that Detroit, Pittsburgh, and a "mystery team is interested. Saying mystery team is an old trick that's been used by agents for years. I was told the team doesn't want it out. Should we assume Detroit and Pittsburgh do?

Montreal D-man Roman Hamrlik expects to hear from Montreal regarding another contract offer before July first.

Florida Better Get Spending…..

The Panthers will need to spend around $30 million bucks just to get to the floor. They remain in rebuild mode and may be forced to take on some bad contracts if it means they get some draft picks in the deal as well. They may not have a choice but to take on bad contracts. Maybe Florida is a possible destination for Ballard who didn’t seem to click with Canucks Head Coach Alain Vigneault. Hard to believe he was passed up by the likes of Aaron Rome, Andrew Alberts, and Chris Tanev during the finals.

Blues Looking for a D-man?

Would the Blues be willing to part with a Barret Jackman if they felt they could replace him in free agency? Jackman has been a true Blue his entire career but is entering the final year of his contract.  It’s safe to assume the Blues would love to get their hands on a Bieksa if they could. He’ll be asking for a deal in the $5 million range.

The Blues will be looking to add an experienced player or two come July. Don’t be surprised to learn Rob Niedermayer is being dangled in front of teams like the Blues. His days of scoring are in the rearview mirror but he certainly adds leadership and experience.

More to come,

Not a fan of Bieksa. He is a good player, but personally I don't like him at all. (maybe because he plays for Vancouver and I dislike a lot of their players)

I hope the Blues look elsewhere as someone is going to pay too much for him this year.

Yandle's situation is interesting. Does the NHL give the GM full control on decisions like matching an offersheet? If not, who makes that call?

I don't know about Yandle, but I hope he doesn't end up in Detroit. Once again, luck plays in their favor. They need a stud defenceman and it just so happens that there are several to be had at this particular time.

Bieksa is not going anywhere, especially with the cap going up. I don't personally like him either, but he is the type of guy the blues need on the back end. Someone with some size and a nasty streak. flag this comment
Carcus there are two things to worry about concerning big money contract seekers: 1) DO they have a drive to win and, 2) Have they already won in the big dance. I'd say Bieksa has a drive to win and he hasn't won yet. That's always a decent thing to find.

Personally I thought when Ballard came in he looked like a guy with some rust. Turns out he had some rust. That's a bet the Canucks lost and now it will cost them. I'll bet some bites on Ballard especially if the cost is cheap.

I don't know how you figure Bryzgalov is asking for too much. He pretty much led a team into the play offs two years in a row that wouldn't have made it if not for him. He's one of the best goaltenders in the league in his prime. Goaltenders get screwed on money because of the shakiness of others. I recall how many pundits were crying about Thomas's over-loaded salary and how Boston couldn't dump him. They acted like because of an injury he was a has been. I guess it goes to show...And I'll bet Boston is more than happy today they had paid him so HUGE they couldn't make the trade they had wanted to.

I know he is a good player. I just hate him. I don't like him at all. I want nothing to do with him as a member of the Blues. That's just me though. I hope he is not even a consideration from management. There are other guys that I would want instead of Bieksa. Heck, I would rather the Blues just go with what they got than pick up Bieksa. And I know that is not the smartest thing, but that is how much I don't want him on our team. flag this comment
lol at you not thinking Bryzgalov is overpaid. He is by far... flag this comment
Man this draft is going to be interesting. Have a feeling the Blues could be busy wheeling and dealing.

Rob Niedermayer is alright but I want someone with toughness, as in fighting/hitting. Or, I'd be fine with getting Niedermayer and signing a fighter in free agency to help out Reaves with the duties.

Why? Seriously you believe what this team needs to make it to post season and to compete for a Cup is a guy that plays four minutes a game? Just so you can be entertained players should risk their lives and end another Derek Boogard or would have rather been at the minor league game where the guy died on the ice? flag this comment
BlueManGuru you are a freakin idiot. When did I say that guy would make us compete for the cup? Obviously we have other needs but we aren't going to sign a guy like Brad Richards. Yes, we need some more toughness. Reaves can't do it all by himself, and neither can Crombeen. That's a fact.

lol at you bringing up Derek Boogaard as your argument. Freakin terrible, seriously, that's dumb as heck. So all enforcers will end up like him? No. And I never said a guy like Boogaard. I want a fighter who can skate and play hockey.

your logic is so stupid. Fighting still has a place in the game and nobody is going to die from it. Shut up and deal with it.
in reply to GoldenHalak41
Boogaard didn't die because of fights. He died because of an accidental overdose of oxycodone and alcohol. Don't see how fighting factored into that. People only thought fights factored into it because the death was so unexpected and there were no conclusive autopsy results for a while.
Carcus, man am I glad you're not a GM. The team's going down the drain if signing players are based on personal preferences. Hypothetically speaking, if Bieksa can get the Cup for Blues, would you still hate him? Because with that mentality, not signing a quality piece there, giving up a good chance there, and there goes the chance to contend.
in reply to JW
One could argue that Boogggaaarrd's use of oxycodone and booze was a direct result of depression caused by post concussion syndrome. flag this comment
Doesnt make a lot of sense if you ask me.

Personal preference does come into play for GMs. There are a lot of D that are options for the Blues. My personal preference would to not even think about signing Bieksa. Your peersonal preference is that he is someone to consider I suppose. There are a lot of factors that go into the decision making process on how to build a team. Personal preference is definately one of them. Mine is very strong when it comes to Bieksa. Others have a strong personal preference on others (such as our former captain)
