Will Phoenix Uncertainty Lead to Doan Trade?
Few players around the league garner as much respect as Phoenix Coyotes Captain Shane Doan. He’s an all around good guy that brings dressing rooms together and the type of player you want providing an example for younger players.
Some guys talk the talk, Doan follows through.
He can also still play which is why Doan will be a commodity come trade deadline time should the Coyotes fall out of the race. He’s in the final year of his contract that pays him just over $4.5 million per season.
Most close to Doan say he would never leave the Coyotes organization. He’s spent his entire career with the franchise and has never shown any desire to walk away.
I’m told he also hasn’t expressed any desire to move to Quebec City next season, which is where the Coyotes are likely headed unless someone steps up and saves the team. The NHL currently owns and operates the organization and sources continue to indicate those days are coming to an end.
Would Doan accept a trade should we get to that point over the next few weeks? He’s a player who wouldn’t disrupt a tight dressing room and would fit in with any club in the league.
It’s almost amazing Phoenix has remained as competitive as they have considering their roster limitations. Shane Doan has a lot to do with this.
He’s personally bought in to what Head Coach Dave Tippett has preached and when Doan buys in the rest of the roster has no choice but to follow. You can make the case he’s the most important player that organization has ever had.
For now the Coyotes continue to basically flounder in the desert. I’m told there’s been very little league presence at their games and there appears to be no real serious effort to keep the team in Arizona.
It wouldn’t surprise me if this team pulls it together and makes a run towards the playoffs but if they fall back look for GM Don Maloney to field calls inquiring about his Captain.
He along with leading scorer Ray Whitney, also in the final year of his contract, will generate plenty of interest. Whitney is a guy who can certainly help a power play but finding available even strength ice may be a bit of a challenge. Regardless there are plenty of teams who would take this guy. I’m told he’s available and will be moved if Phoenix is out of the picture.
Eyes on Visnovsky….
Anaheim D-man Lubomir Visnovsky may be having a down year by his standards but he can still play at a high level. He’s always been a big point producer who can skate, run a power play, and move the puck.
He could also be had for the right price. Visnovsky comes with a $5.6 million cap number but he’s owed just $3 million in salary next season. That’s pretty good value for a guy who had almost 70 points last year.
I always look for players who have a connection to the Blues and the left shot Visnovsky played for pro scout Dave Taylor while he was managing the Los Angeles Kings. How Visnovsky fits in with St. Louis is a good question.
Can you have Visnovsky and Kris Russell playing in your top six?
Not to mention Visnovsky likes to play on his off side. It seems Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, and Polak have the right side taken care of.
Goaltending Merry Go Round…
It shouldn’t come as any real surprise that the San Jose Sharks elected to waive Antero Nittymaki. It’s always odd to see a team assign a veteran goalie on a conditioning assignment not once but twice. For now Thomas Greiss seems to have secured the backup job to Antti Niemi.
Blues prospect Ben Bishop continues to draw some interest from a variety on NHL clubs. San Jose could be a destination as well as Edmonton assuming they move Nikolai Khabibulin as expected.
Bishop has performed well against San Jose and Edmonton in the past.
Obviously teams like Tampa Bay and Columbus could certainly target a goaltender like Bishop. Whoever trades for Bishop will likely need to sign him to a one-way deal before July first to keep him. Hey if Mark Dekanich can fetch a one-way then Bishop should have no problem.
I keep hearing how the Brian Elliott contract spells bad news for Bishop. To me I think it’s great news for the young goaltender, he may have to leave the Blues organization but his goal is to play in the NHL. I don’t think he’s too picky as to which organization he plays for. Again, how many goalies reach the NHL with the same club that drafted them?
Wolski to be moved?
Wojtek Wolklsi a player the Rangers would likely part with. He’s spent much of the season recovering from a sports hernia and has seen limited action since being cleared to play. Wolski comes with a $3.8 million cap number but is a restricted free agent at the end of this season. The former first round pick of the Colorado Avalanche has zero goals and three assists in nine games this year. He’s being paid a whopping $4 million this season.
More to come,

Thus---Correy Perry is not up for grabs unless you want to give away a load of talent. Rick Nash could be had but for a HUGE price especially considering we are in the same division. Mason Raymond has been an excellent hockey player but he's coming back from a severe injury--pass.
With those type of players minus Raymond, you won't have one of an Oshie, Perron, Shattenkirk or Petro. You might not have a Berglund. You might lose two or more those players to get one and a winger at that. It would cost us either Schwartz or Tarasenko on top of it plus a 1st rounder.
I'll take a good solid veteran with a nose for the net and lower price--Doan, Morrow, Whitney, Roy.... But I'm betting the Blues will go for someone with experience and/or superb leadership qualities. Look for a battler, another voice to get these kids going and showing them the right way. Another voice to balance them when the wind blows. Doan is like Langenbrunner if Langs still had a few more steps. flag this comment

. . . Seems like an all too similar problem that the Blues have w/ some current roster spots.
San Jose? I've read that Clowe is possibly available . . . Bishop to SJ? But, alas, that also came from TSN & those boys up north are about as bad as an E3 when it comes to trade speculation.
This REALLY blows not having the ownership thing resolved prior to the deadline. But Army has shown he has some savvy trade skillz; so I'll remain hopeful.
Is anybody else curious about the possible availability of Mikhail Grabovski?
Every once of info on the guy is the peeps in TOR LOVE the guys heart, dedication, & his willingness to go to the nasty spots to score. But Burke & Co. obviously have a plethora of centermen & Grabo is due a raise @ season's end. flag this comment
He's probably the best guy we could ask for except of course as Eggs pointed out his position. But he would be a great guy for Stewart to learn from. He could form if need be a great third line or you can flip flop him all the way to the top. flag this comment
Yest another way to view the situation is that by say accepting a trade you are helping out the franchise that helped develop you into an NHL player. It really isn't a mutually exclusive exercise here. Players and teams have a symbiotic relationship, one cannot do without the other.
I don't know... there are different ways to think about these situations is all I'm trying to point out. How many people grow up and live in the same town their whole lives? Not so many any more. The people with loads of talent and opportunity are the ones that tend to go. Sometimes they even come back. But sometimes it's what you need to do to grow as a person or to truly appreciate what you have in life. Very few people seem able to do just that without needing to experience other things or places in life.

That Mantracker episode was ridiculous. So good.
Guru, I totally agree with you about Whitney. He's the type of guy that we need to get the offense engaged. Right now, I also covet a guy like Martin St. Louis or maybe even a Kris Versteeg. How pumped would he be to eliminate the Blackhawks from the playoffs?! Would a guy like Evander Kane make sense?
Also, how close are the Caps to doing a complete re-boot? If they blew up that team, It'd be interesting to see who became available...
Whitney's not a very physical player, that's his only downfall especially on our team. I love the guys you mention.
I wouldn't be opposed to Doan though like St. Louis he is a right winger. Surely one or two guys can play an off wing. It's actually the best way to play if you can. Ron Caron told me so. The hardest aspect of the off wing is getting the puck on the boards and dealing with the pressure or a body. It doesn't take much to fix that though. flag this comment

It seems what mostly is available are right wingers. So whoever among them are capable of playing the left wing or center.
good showing
No Gill, Gleason, Whitney. I would like a Parenteau. i would love a Moulson. St. louis untouchable. Top pick: versteeg. if there is one player i hope the blues would get would be him from the players that are mention 0n here or moulson.
Eggs or Guru, what do you think about getting Wideman back?
I don't understand why you say no to Whitney. Everytime he's played on a good team and some questionable Carolina teams he's been solid. He scores goals and points. His a left hand shot and more importantly a left winger.
I say this b/c while I love Parenteau he's a rw who's playing in his second NHL season I believe. Moulson would be great but it's hard to imagine if you have time with a proven goal scorer that you would be eager to move him. SO that cost would be probably high. Depending. There's still a chance they might like to deal Okoposo. Though I've noticed that clamor die down over the past month or so, when he started scoring. flag this comment
Wideman has proven the ability to play in all situations. I'm just not recalling if he's a lefty or righty. flag this comment
You have three players that have had concussions. The likelihood they suffer another concussion increases.
Only one these players is a point per game player and his played in three games this season to go along with two concussions. Steen has been playing better and better but he also failed two baseline tests.
It will be interesting to see.

You can say that anywhere on the roster. We are still without two of our top six forwards. We have been saying that almost the entire season.
I think we can where ever we need to as far as what is best available for us out there. We don't have to force ourselves to over spend. We can go where we need to if a great deal pops up as well.
We're in a great position. flag this comment
