What a Season for Mark Reeds and Owen Sound
What a year it’s been for Owen Sound Head Coach Mark Reeds who led the Attack to their best record in franchise history. After missing the playoffs last season Reeds responded by capturing the OHL championship in seven games over Mississauga on Sunday.
He now prepares for the Memorial Cup, a place familiar to Reeds going back to his playing days with the Peterborough Petes. He appeared three times as a player winning the title in 1979 along with several former NHL players including Keith Crowder, Bill Gardner, and Hall of Famer Larry Murphy.
Reeds played 365 NHL games with St. Louis and Hartford before retiring in the early 1990’s. His coaching career includes a successful stint with the Missouri River Otters of the UHL
One of the best people you’ll meet in hockey, Reeds was named the OHL Coach of the Year last month. He looks to continue this run when he faces the Kootenay Ice, the WHL representative, later this week.
The Attack are led by Colorado first rounder Joey Hishon as well as Captain and Florida draft pick Garrett Wilson. These guys along with undrafted overage forward Robby Mignardi battled back from a 0-2 deficit in the OHL finals. Mignardi won the Wayne Gretzky 99 award as playoff MVP leading all players with 15 goals and tying for the playoff lead with 24 points
Reeds used a combination of three different goaltenders in the final round with draft eligible Jordan Binnington finishing out game six and seven.
Thousands of fans lined the streets of small town Ontario as the Owen Sound bus made the two hour trek back from Mississauga. Beginning in Dundalk, Ontario (45 minutes outside of Owen Sound) all the way back to the rink, fans could be seen and heard cheering on a team made up of mostly teenagers. Reeds tells me 3,000 fans eventually packed the building upon arrival to honor the OHL champions.
One can hope the success leads to an opportunity coaching in the AHL or NHL.
