The Ultimate Team Player

Feb 17

It’s hard not to be impressed with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. Sure he has the advantage of spending to the cap but so do some other GM’s who haven’t been nearly as successful.

Outside of Nikolai Zherdev, it’s hard to really pinpoint the mistakes Holmgren has made with his hockey club. Here’s an old school guy who’s shown the ability to get it done in the cap era. It’s one thing to freely spend like we see with Glen Sather and the New York Rangers, building a team with chemistry who competes for a Stanley Cup is a different story.

Is there anything better than a GM who treats his players and others around him with respect?  Most players would tell you no. It can set the foundation for an entire organization when the people up top are humble and respectful.

It will be hard to go against Philadelphia come playoff time when you consider their depth offensively. On any given night leading scorers such as Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux might be playing on the third line. If not them then it’s Mike Richards and newly acquired Kris Versteeg. It could even be the highest scoring line in the league consisting of Danny Briere, Ville Leino and Scott Hartnell. Not all of these guys are free agent or trade pickups either. Throw in James Van Riemsdyk along with Giroux, Carter and Richards and you have some pretty impressive draft picks with JVR the only one selected in the top ten.

The Flyers also have, in my opinion, the second best fourth line in the league with Darroll Powe, Blair Betts, and Daniel Carcillo. I say second best as I wouldn’t put them ahead of the fourth line in San Jose consisting of Ben Eager, Scott Nichol, and Jamal Mayers.

Speaking of Leino by the way, there’s been a lot of talk regarding a contract extension. Both sides have been talking and were gaining some traction. Recently Holmgren approached Leino and gave him an option. Sources say he told Leino we can get the deal done now or add Versteeg and wait until after the season.  Leino responded quickly “I want to win a Cup”.

The trade for Versteeg takes away the necessary tag room available to sign Leino to a contract now. In other words, there isn’t enough space under next years salary cap to sign Leino today. Holmgren assured Leino that the deal will get taken care of after the season once the necessary moves are made to create cap room. For now the deal has been halted which is of no concern to Leino whose main priority is winning. There is certainly some risk considering there is no offer on the table but the trust factor is certainly in play.

It’s one thing to be impressed by Holmgren but it an era of rich spoiled athletes it gives you an idea of the type of person Leino is as well. How many players would turn down millions of dollars and financial security for the better of the team? You could probably find some in the NHL but outside of pro hockey I’m not so sure.

The Flyers players are on a mission to win a Stanley Cup and having unselfish players like a Ville Leino and strong leadership with Paul Holmgren gives them hope. Having a quality defense anchored by Chris Pronger won’t hurt their chances either.

OT I know, but I finally got a chance to watch the entire melee ensue between the Pens and the Isles. Pretty entertaining considering it occurs so infrequently....yet still embarrassing at the same time. What I found absolutely hysterically funny was how the Penguin announcers had the gall to call Gillies a complete waste of space when their very own Matt Cooke is easily the most dangerous, stupid, embarrassing player in the entire league. It's kind of the pot calling the kettle black. Also, I want to know if those Pens announcers got fined at all by the league, but I found THEM to be the embarrassment when they referred to the Isles as being an "embarrassment to the league itself". That's rather unprofessional...and as a TV jockey, you really have no business sharing that opinion with the viewers.

You are an idiot! EVERY team has local announcers that are expected to be somewhat of a homer. In this case, they were right on target. I love the Cooke comparisons. While Cooke does cross the line occassionally, he also is a very valuable player. How long do you think he would last on the open market? He kills penalties, is a great forechecker and scores timely goals. Unlike the thugs brought up just to extract revenge....an for what?? DiPietro coming out of his crease and taking a shot at Cooke at the end of the game and then getting his face broken for being an idiot? Remember...Cooke didn't initiate that. How about the other jokes delivering a suckerpunch from behind or hitting a defenseless player from behind and then delivering punches when he was already out? Oh...let's not forget the taunting. the announcers had it right when they suggested that the animals be put back in the cage. there is a BIG difference between making a bad decision during a hockley play, which Cooke does, and premeditated assault......especially when you aren't man enough to do it face to face. flag this comment
I take it you're a Pens fan. Figures....

Thanks for calling me an idiot,....you're about as classy as your announcers and Matt Cooke combined. Peace out. flag this comment
Actually I am a Flyers fan and don't care much for the Pens but I can at least be fair. If you can't see the problems with the behavior and the league's failure to address it properly, you should probably stop watching the game.

Pleae explain to me the value that Gillies brings to a team. He is a career minor leaguer and Cooke has been in the NHL full-time for almost 10 years. How again is that a waste of space? The Isles ARE an embarrassment to the league, ask their own fans who have been watching their team waste millions on frivolous contracts (Yashin, DiPietro), lose games in a crappy building and get nothing back in return for the better part of 15 years. This once proud franchise is a joke now. flag this comment
Any respectable major professional sports league in the world is not going to want to get negative press that one of their own is the red-headed step-child thus it gives the entire league a black-eye that they exist. It's one thing for the Pens' announcers to say this is ridiculous and enough is enough, but to go as far as saying that the Isles are an embarrassment to the league is too much. While it might hold some truth to it,...you just don't say it as they, being brand ambassadors, should not being trying to pull the league's reputation down by letting their emotions get the best of them on air.

While Gillies is/was a call-up for this very reason of gooning it up, I cannot believe how you stand behind Cooke. I don't care if they guy scores 50+ goals a season...if he's going to create dangerous situations for other players out there...he don't belong. Trust me,....Cooke creates very dangerous situations as he's nothing more than a liability. That's great that he can kill a penalty as well....still don't matter in my book. If you want to be an agitator, that's one thing...when you do things that are potentially dangerous to those around you in order to give your team an advantage....sorry, there is no room for that. flag this comment
this has certainly been a banner year for Philadelphia fans, several players have opting to put the team first. Carter and Giroux both took pay cuts to stay here, and who can forget Cliff Lee taking significantly less money than what was being offered to come back to the Phillies. I really think its players like that which have made all the difference, teams do better when the players actively want to be a part of it and when fans see this dynamic they go wild. it really creates a great atmosphere

you mean something that Albert Pujols is incapable of? *cough* *cough* Sorry, just had to throw that out there. Back to hockey talk.... flag this comment
no apology necessary, just because it happened outside of Philly doesnt take away from what he did. We have been lucky to have players like that, but that doesnt mean I dont enjoy seeing it happen in other cities, in fact I encourage it, its whats best for sports

Halak is now out with a hand injury?

Just when the team looks like it is getting healthy, another key guy goes down.

Management can't afford to sign offense so they tanking the season. flag this comment
Andy, with Halak's most recent injury and with Bishop getting the call up from Peoria yet again, do you see the Blues getting Bishop some starts this go-around? I mean, what would it hurt at this point? We're not contenders...so let's not fool ourselves.
in reply to NortheastBlue15
He almost has to, Halak will for sure miss Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Asking Conklin to play 3 games in 4 days is an awful lot of a starter much less a backup. Not to mention if Halak isn't ready by Tuesday, it is 4 games in 5 days. flag this comment
