Teams Searching For Goaltending Help
Looking around the NHL one common theme so far has been injuries to goaltenders.
Teams such as Minnesota, Tampa Bay, and Philadelphia have all been bitten by the injury bug early on in the pre-season.
Sure there are veteran guys available such as Manny Legace and Jose Theordore. Both these guys are more than capable of coming in and solidifying the position immediately and I think before it’s all said and done you will see both of them land NHL jobs. Minnesota has already contacted both of Legace and Theodore in regard to their goaltending vacancy. The fact is Theodore will have to be willing to take a pretty good haircut if he wants to play in the NHL this season.
What about Blues backup Ty Conklin? At just over $1 million bucks, I’m sure there are several teams out there that would love to get a hold of this guy. This includes the St. Louis Blues who are happy to happy they have him. If you were Blues GM Doug Armstrong would you consider moving him for a player that would upgrade your roster?
Would you be comfortable with big Ben Bishop as your backup in the NHL? Bishop has certainly done his part during the Pre-season having allowed only one goal in two games including a shutout in Colorado last Sunday. The one goal he did let in wasn’t exactly his fault as there was little he could have done to prevent it. Bishop still seems to have a little ways to go as he hasn’t exactly torn up the AHL the last few years. He still has some holes in his game but is feeling stronger after putting a greater influence on his conditioning and becoming more flexible this summer and so far it seems to have paid off. This is the final year of Bishop’s contract and with a solid season in Peoria he could position himself to slide in as Jaroslav Halak’s backup next season.
As we sit right now the Blues feel more than comfortable with their goaltending tandem which is as strong as any in the league. With that being said, you can be sure there are teams out there that would love to add a Ty Conklin to their roster and I wouldn’t be shocked to learn the Blues have fielded some calls.
