Shanahan Meets With Blues

Feb 21

Blues forward Jamie Langenbrunner is expected to miss the next four weeks after x-rays showed a fracture in his left foot. The injury happened Sunday in Chicago after blocking a shot. The exact time of the injury is unclear as the veteran forward didn’t complain until after the game was over.

Langenbrunner has been unreal this season for the Blues. His name may not always show up on the scoresheet but this guy has been as versatile as any forward on the roster. He can play a checking role, play with skilled players, kills penalties, and has played the point on the power play.

He’s as intelligent as any player the Blues have and his work ethic is unmatched by most.

His awareness defensively sets a great example with his ability to apply backside pressure as well as his strength on the boards. You need players who can get pucks out or chip pucks in and this guy has been better than advertised.

Of course the Blues will miss Langenbrunner’s leadership on and off the ice. He’s a winning player who’s had a tremendous impact on numerous teammates. The good news is the club knows they’ll be getting him back. This isn’t a season ending injury and the team has no choice but to move forward.

The Blues aren’t the only team to be hit with injuries, just look around the league and you’ll see plenty of teams dealing with similar circumstances.

Detroit will be without Pavol Datsyuk for a few weeks after he suffered a knee injury. Chicago Captain Jonathan Toews is also sidelined with an upper body injury. The days of the Blues feeling sorry for themselves when it comes to injuries are in the rearview mirror.

They’ve been able to push through all year and I see no reason to expect this to change.

Colaiacovo Returns…

D-man Carlo Colaiacovo returns Wednesday vs. Boston after missing the last three games. Kent Huskins will sit this one out.

Sobotka Replaces Langenbrunner…

Vladimir Sobotka will replace Langenbrunner on a line with T.J. Oshie and David Backes. This will eventually become Alex Steen’s spot once he returns from a concussion. Steen did not practice with the team today.

Neither did Matt D’Agostini who has not skated since suffering a concussion earlier this month.

David Perron slides down to play with Patrik Berglund and Andy McDonald.

Chris Stewart joins Jason Arnott and Chris Porter.

Reaves, Crombeen and Nichol round out the top four lines

The Blues will be taking an extra forward from Peoria with them on the upcoming road trip.

Brian Elliott starts Wednesday with Jaro Halak scheduled to get the nod Thursday in Nashville.

Shanahan meets with Blues…

NHL Executive Brendan Shanahan continued his tour around the league Tuesday in St. Louis.

Shanahan showed several video clips and explained how he and the NHL determine whether or not a player is deserving of a suspension. Evidently there is a formula and the players were filled in with how this is utilized when it comes to discipline.

I like that Shanahan does this as it allows players to ask questions and gives both sides a better understanding of where each of them are coming from.

With that being said Shanahan should also be meeting with the media so we can ask questions and hopefully eliminate some of the obvious confusion that exists.

Ownership Update…

A high ranking NHL official tells me the league remains optimistic in Tom Stillman’s ability to close on a purchase to buy the Blues. They also said this is probably taking longer than Stillman anticipated.

The league continues to show a tremendous amount of support and patience with Stillman as the task of buying an NHL hockey team is no easy challenge. Stillman’s exclusive agreement runs through March 15th and it appears unlikely a deal will be consummated before then. This isn’t to alarm fans as he will still have the opportunity to close after March 15th should he need more time.

Uh-oh.

I've seen this movie before. It doesn't have a happy ending.

lol. Seriously??? Still haven't heard which monied people backed. I will guess the Taylors if they have a billion or so pulling out 50-100 million or get a credit line should not be a problem. Or was it the Danforth's? This sucks a big one.
I guess Hulsizer it is but maybe he should take Stillman with him instead some of the other people mentioned and dear god do not give anything extra to Checketts. flag this comment
I got $5 on it. flag this comment
Bad news for the team losing Langs. If Steen could come back in this time priod that would be great! Just feeling like we headed for a slide. I hope I'm wrong. Staying positive!

Glass half full = Langenbrunner gets a good rest before the real battle begins. flag this comment
I would like to know how Peters only received one game. On what planet is that even remotely worse than Stewart or Cole's hits????
in reply to BlueManGuru
Also what is the equation for a repeat offender leaving his feet and targeting a player's head? That would be very interesting as two first time offenders got three games and sorry but against the WIngs and none of us are supposed to wonder what is going on here? flag this comment
It's all f_ckin BS!!!! This new "formula" just isn't working. Period. In the offseason they should be looking for a newer formula or whatever they are calling this circus. Right now it's a Shriner's circus but it quickly turning into the Ringling Bros. lol (Had to throw that in there for comical purposes.) flag this comment
I was thinking the same thing. I thought 5 minimum but 10 would have not surprised me. But 1 makes me wonder what the hell Shanny is doing in this job. He was clearly the wrong choice for this job! flag this comment
I totally agree, that isn't right!!! flag this comment
I can't believe the Red Wings got kyle Quincy for only a first round pick. The rich get richer.
in reply to fattyboubatty
What did they get when they traded him to Colorado in the first place? Poop on the Wings. Too many old guys they run out of steam as the season goes now a days. flag this comment
Yzerman is a punk-ass bitch. Is he the GM of the Lightning to make them better or as a bullshit feeder to the Fucking Rape Wings?

btw- way to draft a rapist, Wings.

Wha? Who? flag this comment
Yzerman traded Downie to the Avs for Kyle Quincey. Rather than bolstering his own blueline (which needs work), he trades Quincey to the Wings for their first round pick this year. flag this comment
Red Wings draft pick from BU was arrested for rape.

Looking at it like that it is pretty screwy. The Lightening are desperate for defensemen and they give it up for a late first/ early second rounder? Give me a break that is completely weak considering what Gill fetched and Gill is old slow and sucks. flag this comment
Ok so anyone know how I could see/meet Tim Thomas before or after the game tomarrow? I'm a huge fan and want my jersey signed by him.
in reply to stormcujo
Try chirping him about how you think government sucks too on Facebook... flag this comment
Seriously? Do you like sucking on Glenn Beck's************** also?

Screw Thomas. He gets to play on the Olympic team and won't meet the president? Seriously? He makes a political statement and claims it isn't a political statement. I no longer like Thomas and everyday I hear his name or see him I hope his career comes to an immediate end with him blowing his knees out so bad he can get a glimpse of the pain I live with every day fighting in a war that puss could never do. flag this comment
Brad Stuart better get a damn suspension for his cheap elbowing hit tonight. No intent to hit the guy anywhere else when your going for a hip check and also throw your elbow at the guys head. Oh wait, I'm crazy. He won't get suspended nevermind. There was no penalty and the player didn't get injured. Bullsh*t!!!!!!!
in reply to lopey10
And then right as I was typing that, Clifford hits Brule with an elbow in the LA-PHX game. WTF!!! Brule is hurt and then there's a mad brawl. Clifford gets the 5-10 gone. Suspension?????

It's so sad that we have to question every hit. Especially when BS is going around talking to all the teams. What a fricken joke. flag this comment
You know what's even more sad than all the things being discussed in this message thread?...the fact that's I've been seeing some rumblings about the Blues having interest in either / both Travis Moen and Steve Ott. REALLY!? 'effin STEVE OTT?? You've GOT to be kidding me.
in reply to NortheastBlue15
Dude, that's just Eklund being Eklund. Anytime you read something on his site, just tell yourself this: Wow, what if that were actually true? flag this comment
I will freely admit that I read that there, but I've also seen it in some passing notes else-where (non of which being reputable hockey sites that we all agree are the most legitimate). So I agree that {as I always say too when it comes to Eklund} I need to take it with a grain of salt. However, if anything I'm just dismayed that Steve Ott and St. Louis are even mentioned in the same sentence. Ott is nothing more than a clown.

Now, as for Moen,...I've actually seen more rumblings about him and the Blues other than Eklund (it was a few weeks back and I'm not exactly sure where I saw it so I'll refrain from citing some site such as tsn.ca or to the likes), but he is Hitch's kind of player. I just don't think he is what we need,...but like always he has a ring and he's got tons of playoff experience. flag this comment
NEB if you consider the need for the depth and at the same time not being able to really add any salary your best shot at an upgrade is going to come to your bottom six. Besides we might need some depth.

I'm not saying hey that's what we need but at the same time I'll be realistic--four guys coming off of or dealing with concussions, a broken leg, an ankle surgery, a busted shoulder....... Many of these injuries can be problematic or just not happen again. This could be a great year to add maybe a forward but teams that are out or in the border town of the playoffs keep winning and losing so teams that shouldn't have a glimmer now find that bit of hope. flag this comment
No to Hamrlik.
