Ryane Clowe on the Clock
The San Jose Sharks are buyers seemingly every year. This year they could be buyers and sellers.
Ryane Clowe is the top player targeted on a number of wish lists throughout the NHL.
With each passing day it becomes clearer that Clowe is not interested in re-signing with the Sharks although that can change quickly. He’s had since July 1st to try and work out an extension.
There are teams from both the East and the West with serious interest in the gritty forward.
Out of the East (as of yesterday)Philadelphia, Boston, NYR, and Montreal have expressed the most serious interest.
In the West I’m told Minnesota, Chicago, and Vancouver. With the Canucks landing Derek Roy and Chicago getting center Michal Handzus there may not be as much urgency in landing another forward.
Sources say Winnipeg also had legitimate interest in Handzus but were unwilling to part with a fourth round pick.
San Jose did Handzus as favor as much as anything. Scott Gomez looks to have secured the third line center spot once occupied by the Slovakian native. This opportunity allows Handzus to go play for a coach he’s familiar with and try and land a decent contract for next season.
When you consider what happened with Jarome Iginla in Calgary you can be sure San Jose GM Doug Wilson will look to avoid a similar disaster.
The Sharks seem to have found their grove and are winning games. They’d prefer to keep Clowe and win a series or two if the alternative is getting a draft pick as compensation.
Clowe needs to decide if he’s willing to be a rental or if he needs a contract extension in place before he waives his no trade clause. He’s had conversations with multiple teams regarding an extension.
The Rangers also appear very interested but will need to move dollars.
Word is Boston is looking for a third line LW and well as a D-man. With guys like Chris Kelly and Adam McQuaid out with injury Peter Chiarelli has some holes he’d like to fill.
Jets Talking Extension…
Sources say Winnipeg is discussing a contract extension with former first rounder Zach Bogosian.
Bogosian is a guy who has proven he can log minutes at both ends of the ice.
Raffi Torres is a guy that Phoenix could move for the right return. There's been talk of Vancouver having interest. Torres would help a number of playoff teams looking to add some sandpaper to their roster.
Blues to Partner with the Chicago Wolves?
Sources close to the Wolves tell me there are multiple teams interested in affiliating themselves with Chicago.
St. Louis makes obvious sense on a number of levels. First there’s a 45 minute flight back and forth every hour.
It would also save the team money. The Chicago wolves are a full service operation. They pick up the tab for staff, travel, equipment, per diem, etc…Their staff is bigger than some NHL outfits.
They’re one of the only teams who arrive the day before a game and they fly anywhere over a three hour bus ride.
They set the parameters to how things are run which tends to scare off certain teams. Obviously they stay in contact with the NHL club but for the most part they run their own operation. The Wolves keep their own colors and don't even put a patch of their NHL affiliation on their jersey.
The big question out there is whether or not Calgary is able to move out of Abbotsford to Utica, NY next season. If they can’t there’s a possibility Vancouver plays in Peoria for a year until they find a home. Again this is just one scenario that could play out.
Things should get settled at the upcoming AHL Board of Governors meeting May 13th in Chicago.
Sources say the Wolves have not yet talked with Vancouver regarding their future plans. Blues GM Doug Armstrong has been in contact with the Wolves.
