Peter Stastny Comments Necessary?

Feb 24

Just because you had a Hall of Fame career doesn't give you the right to make unecessary comments.

I like Peter Stastny, and the entire Stastny family for that matter, but the comments made about the Colorado trade were questionable. All this did was put his son Paul in an awkward situation where’s he’s forced to answer questions he should never have to face. Not to mention Stastny and Erik Johnson are good friends away from the game. I’m curious if Bruce Johnson (Erik’s Father) would like to weigh in with his thoughts?

If anything these comments were disrespectful to Johnson.

I have a lot of respect for Peter Stastny but we can all agree these comments would have been better off unsaid. Peter’s sons Yan and Paul are too of the better people in the game and don’t deserve this type of attention.  I should mention Yan is good friends and a former teammate of Johnson as well.

More to come,

Sounds like Peter Stastny was speaking as a fan. Does he work for an NHL team? If so then yes his comments crossed a line. If no, then he is just a fan expressing his displeasure for a trade his team made. He sounds like a passionate fan but him blasting a trade is no different than me calling Zach Stortini a plug. As fan's we have the right to complain about moves are teams make and believe they can win despite outlandish odds.

I agree. The Stastny's are good people. Hell when I first met Yan I felt sorry for him. He didn't particularly look great on the ice. SO as years went by I was surprised to see him in the NHL. I was happy for him. Maybe we can gain from it and pick up Paul. That would of course be awesome.

By the way Peter was right. They were only missing a few pieces. The team was destroyed by injuries and some lack of defense. Anderson is an incredible goalie and that trade might even have been worse than the one they made with us. Shattenkirk is incredible and far above Johnson's development so far. Johnson still hasn't learned how to read the defense in front of him on the power play, when to crank a shot, when to throw it on net quick, when to keep a shot low with traffic or how to open up the ice with a threat of a shot(b/c his hardly ever make it). McClement.... He helps the team and getting another first rounder albeit out of the top ten makes the trade look like 1-1-1-1-2-2. But we all know how much harder it is to find a goal scorer in this league when you draft from the defense first. Not a horrible strategy at all. Look we shook out the chaff from the wheat and ended with more wheat.

Andy you need to catch onto something in this league and that is alot of these younger players are far more hungry than most of the veterans around. There are still amazing veterans lurking out there but not as many as there once were. I think a lot of these kids will end up being those kind of solid citizens for the NHL but we've been in a transition since the lock out. The question is when is the league going to keep enforcing the rules they brought in instead of protecting teams that don't have the same depth? Certain franchises seem more protected than others. Let the process take care of itself. We have never had so many interesting players with talent tossed around on waivers let alone sitting in the AHL before. SO many careers ending so quickly because of the dearth of talent and also the lack of money so easily being spread around.

I agree about EJ. When you watch Shattenkirk, you can tell he has much better offensive vision and thus is a better passer. EJ never looked very comfortable on the power play and even on our sub par power play was on the second unit, as well as the second PK unit for most of the year. Looking at the highlights from the colorado games, while short handed he let a couple passes go right through him which resulted in goals. It will be interesting to see what happens in colorado now that they are thrusting EJ into the number one role as their top penalty killer and power play point man.

I actually agree with what Stastny said, even if it was unnecessary. That team had the offense, they just needed to shore up their D and goaltending. Considering how far they are from the cap, they could have easily added a couple pieces and became a contender. Now they're banking on EJ to be their saving grace, and they could be in for a huge disappointment. flag this comment
I really think that EJ was just stuck in between roles. He was trying to figure out where he fit in but nothing was an exact fit. Not physical enough to be a shut down Dman, not enough vision to be an scoring / setup threat. May have tried to hard to fit a certain role that was just not him.

Think hell be a solid Dman but jury is still out if he'll be a franchise player. At this pace, his career could easily follow eric brewers. High expectations with a trade only to underwhelm in the end. Hope he does well but not surprised the team made this move.

One thing we can all agree on is that the Avalanches are going through a very trying time right now. Something is not jelling. Maybe the wrong mix of personalities, maybe lack of experience, maybe too many injuries, maybe lack of a game plan. All they have to work with is what they have left. They each need to go out each night and do their best! If they have done that, what more can you ask? If they have not given, their best they need to step it up a notch. Good Luck on the West Coast.

If people wouldn't post blog articles dramatizing the situation it wouldn't really be an issue...

He has his right to an opinion like everyone else.

gerk you are corrreecctt!SIR !!! he was stuck between roles.. I LOVE the trade if bergland would watch stewart he might score some goals!! bergy was taking laps past the net in VAN like he was skating at steinbergs. GO TO THE FRONT BERGY!!! KANE DOES IT AND HE IS HALF YOUR SIZE !! TOUGHEN UP!! the 2 best players on the ice have been avalanche !!S-KIRK is sick ,he is so much better with the puck than EJ.. his passing is UNBELIEVABLE !! BUT MOST our players are not good enough to anticipate his blind pass !!
