Parise Still Undecided

Jul 2

Zach Parise still isn't ready to make decision on where he'll sign. In the meantime the rest of the free agent market appears to be jammed up.

Several teams remain interested including the Chicago Blackhawks who employ fellow Shattuck St. Mary's alum Jonathan Toews. Sources say the Blackhawks have turned to some current players to help recruit the NHL star. The New jersey Devils are right there as well.

Chicago has also expressed interest in D-man Ryan suter

Carle quiet...

Sources close to Matt Carle tell me things remain very quiet as he won't sign before fellow free agent Ryan Suter. Word is Carle would like to sign in Colorado where he starred for the University of Denver. His brother was on the DU coaching staff as a student coach before recently taking an assistant job with Green Bay in the USHL.

Salvador...

Bryce Salvador heard from 10 teams yesterday and remains undecided where he'll sign.

Woywitka returns...

The Blues have brought back Jeff Woywitka on a 1 yr, 2-way deal worth $700,000/$105,000. he spent last season with the New York Rangers.

Langenbrunner mulling Options...

Jamie Langenbrunner has an offer from the Blues but doesn't appear to be in any rush to sign. He has spoken to a few other teams as well.

Filip Kuba...

The Blues showed interest in Kuba who signed a two year deal worth $8 mill with Florida. He owns a home in the Miami area and was looking to return to the team that originally drafted him.

Taylor Chorney...

The Blues are excited to have Chorney back as they weren't happy to see Edmonton pluck him back off of waivers last season. He'll compete with Wotwika and Ian Cole for the final spot on the Blues defense. He and Woywitka will need waivers to be sent down assuming they don't make the team out of camp. This is assuming the team doesn't make a trade between now and the start of camp.

Paul Martin?

Add Pittsburgh's Paul Martin's name to the list of possible trade targets on defense.

I've been a lifelong blues fan, but the truth is they are never going to win a cup. They don't ever do anything, they never sign anyone, absolutely zero big names. If I were Armstrong, I would let halak, Perron, oshie, and jackman go to a team that may be able to win. If those players ever hoist a cup, it won't be in a blues jersey.

^ what a "fan". Brilliant, guy. flag this comment
Wayne Gretzky wasn't a big name? flag this comment
I also have been a Blues fan since day one 1967 when my father would take me to
a game,or listen to Dan Kelly thur the years and yes
there have been down times, however i feel we finally are closer than ever,it might not be next year,or the year after that, but we are close,I just can't wait for the day
that we have that crazy parade downtown with the cup.

Wayne Gretzky wasn't a big name?...
in reply to bmost88
Not really actually. He was a name, his skill level, and toughness wasn't long gone, but a non factor. I would have signed jokinen, or Parenteau, or even hudler. All those guys are 25 goal scorers, who make everyone around them better. For Christ sake they are 38 million bellow the cap. They haven't even signed oshie and Perron ? They don't want to win, they should have let a great coach like Hitchcock win with a young hungry team like Winnipeg or the islanders. I heard parise is leaning toward the wild, they're not going to win anytime soon, but they're willing to spend, the blues are unwilling to spend, and not interested in winning. flag this comment
Who cares if Oshie and Perron are signed yet? What difference does that make? I'll be disapointed if they miss on Carle. Sounds like he will get a kings ransome though at this point. Thanks for nothing Calgary. flag this comment
All this cap space, and all this talent available, and they bring back Taylor chorney, and Jeff woywitka ??? What the hell ? Why your at it might as well bring back jay McKee, and Ryan Johnson.
in reply to AJ_S
They have to ice a team in Peoria too. Relax. flag this comment
While not impressed by our first posts this one is correct. But depth is depth. But come on we have a lot of talented young blue liners. flag this comment
Ha ha ha. I can't BELIEVE some fans actually think they will sign Matt carle, or any body else for that matter. I've been a blues fan my whole life, but I'm done with them. Go jets, at least they are making efforts to improve thier team. Actually 29 other teams are as well, but we all know the one that's not.
in reply to AJ_S
I believe you are correct. My belief is that it is nothing more than a ploy to take the heat off of new ownership that have been complaining about the cost of doing business even before they bought the team. flag this comment
AJ_S... Some words of advice "Patience is a virtue". We are two days into free agency buddy, nothing is going to happen until Parise and Suter make decisions and as much as it would be nice to have them, it would cripple us in the future with the amount of RFA's and UFA's that we have coming up... take a deep breath my friend lol.

(And please dont post another response with "I have been following the Blues my whole life" we get that.)

I was trying to have an intelligent sports convo with some fans, but everyone else was only into condescending remarks. Let me know how that 45 plus years of patience works out for you all.
in reply to AJ_S
It wasn't very intelligent bud, your points were brutal... flag this comment
Hey when you touch the truth they piss their pants. Many were enthralled with signing Jackoff, I mean Jackman for three years at $3million plus. Now they talk about Carle and others when before this the owners have been talking about fiscal responsibility which generally means we don't want to spend money on the team. flag this comment
Some of you say relax, it's just two days into free agency, wrong ! For the blues it's 40 years into free agency and they have never, ever, signed a solid long term player. And why are so many teams waiting for parise and suter to sign ? Who decided these guys are the standard of the NHL ? If they were as good as advertised, they would already have a ring. Honestly I think now, and have always thought parise is a bum, I feel bad for whatever team signs him for 100 million for 10 years.
in reply to AJ_S
This would make you incorrect. Some might say hey Brendan Shannahan which was turned into Pronger which was turned into a 6"4" pile of Walmart bull.

There have been others as well. Get this...not a lot of teams have actually signed a free agent for many years and benefited from the cost unless they made a trade. flag this comment
Lol ur lack of hockey knowledge makes me laugh. Parise a bum? Lay off the crack buddy.
in reply to stormcujo
Suck his dick on your own time, my hockey knowledge is far to great for this website, I know this because even though I made "brutal" points, not one person made any counter points, they just immediately started hurling insults. A reue sign of low intellect. Even Andy flip flops constantly. And it's your, not ur, what are you a pre-pubescent girl texting away. flag this comment
Valid point number one. Parise isnt a bum . 2 I believe the Blues.had.Hull Shanny Oats Pronger Mccinnis Federko just to name a few. Trades are just as good as signing a free agent abd the Blues have a pretty good track record on minus the pronger for brewer trade lol. flag this comment
stormcujo Those minus Shanny were all trades. Even Shanny was vitually a trade as well as Scott Stevens due to the loss of players involved. flag this comment
On a side note I.bet you havent been "watching for 40 years" you act like a teen or an immature 20 something.
in reply to stormcujo
Where's their cup ? Where's parises cup ? He didnt even have a point in the finals until game four, thats a bum, not a proud champion. And I'm 25, you don't have to be an old 40ish man to weigh in on a team. Where is all this false hope coming from ? I've bled blue for as long as I can remember, but every year it's the same shit, wait until free agency, nothing, they'll get better through trades, never any trades, then it's on to after the all star break they'll pick it up, which they don't, and finally, what happened, how did we get knocked out of the playoffs, and then it's waiting until July 1, only to be let down again. This team is the Chicago cubs of hockey. flag this comment
I mean honestly, what team rebuilds for almost half a century ? They are in a constant state of rebuilding, with zero results. Pull your heads out of your asses. I would love to see this team win, but it's just not ever going to happen, EVER !!! This is my last post, good luck to them and to you fans, I mean that.
in reply to AJ_S
If they dont make enough money, they cant support a cap team. You're an idiot. I mean i guess its a good idea to spend money you dont actually make because that works out really well. Good thing you're done posting, AJ "im mentally incapable" S flag this comment
You were too young to witness some of their great years man. I'm not forty but shit son. You make a good point then become too dramatic and get off point. flag this comment
@Jake They do make enough money man. It's just how they describe costs and what have you. They talk about gate price and blah blah blah. Yeah they lost out a bit on the concessions but they made a bunch of money this season.

But you can believe a politician's family. Its not like the Danforths haven't owned this team before or anything. I mean you merely look at some of these partners' business history and you know there is not one reason to trust them. They are not your friends. They didn't buy the team out of civic responsibility. I can understand they may not be a quite a cap team but they didn't spend near it last season and making it two rounds was box office gold for them. flag this comment
Thank God, hopefully you go take a Xanax. This guy is worse than Lonewolf haha flag this comment
@ light the lamp lol Seriously no one is as bad as that ass clown. flag this comment
I love Parise and Suter. But taking a second with all the hype and the eventual money and well.....I can't see their value as they get older. Suter maybe b/c dmen have a tendency to last longer with dominance.

But let's be real neither is a top flight player. 69 points for a forward and he's going to be paid serious money. If he's smart he goes to a team that has talent and pays him.

But the teams that end up with these guys have a two year window before those contracts start to feel pretty heavy.

The prices being tossed about is the pay of two good young players. FOr instance would you want one Parise or two Backes on your team? I'm for the latter. Parise has an injury history, getting older and is looking to cash in.

Suter is looking to win and balance that with cashing in. He was thinking Detroit but it seems everyone is jumping that ship and the stars of that team are getting a bit rusty and has anyone seen Detroit lately????? It looks worst than Iraq! Seriously I would be more afraid to go into Detroit than Baghdad.
in reply to BlueManGuru
Dude...I think you need to do a little fact-checking before you proclaim that Parise is an injury case. He had one (1) knee issue that was resolved and he's 100%. He's also only 27, which is placing him right in the sweet-spot of the beginning of "prime" years for an elite player. He also saw a reduction of points this season b/c he's playing on a line with a one-man-band in Kovalchuk. As far as posing the question as to whether you'd want 1 Parise or 2 Backes on the team....again, I think you under-state Parise's blue-collar approach to hockey as he's no "foo-foo" finesse player. I'd take 2 of each please. Parise would be awesome in a Blue-note, but there is a few things to consider here as to why this would NEVER happen:

1) we all think that he'd be more inclined to possibly sign here if the Blues re-signed Langenbrunner. However, while Langs might provide some good queues for Parise, Langs has like another 2 years left in him before he hangs them up....Parise is looking for 10 years. Not sure if it would peak Parise's interest want to play in STL if Langs isn't around...but who knows.

2) all of this is null and void anyways as it's being widely speculated that Parise has a short list of team's he's most willing to go to at this point. {I doubt the Blues were even a consideration}

3) ...probably the most damning thing as to why the Blues wouldn't get him (even if they were interested) is that he wants a $12M signing bonus at the point that he signs on thte dotted line and then an additional $12M bonus this time next year. With the Blues financial situation, that's never gonna happen in a million years. flag this comment
But this doesn;t mean there isn't something out there that would improve the Blues. Dangle Perron and if this team has some issue with Cole which is what they seem to be showing then move his ass for another dman. But please make it more worthwhile than freaking a Nikithin for Russell trade. That one will haunt us for a while yet.
in reply to BlueManGuru
I still cannot believe that Hudler got $4M/per. Leave it to the Flames to set a ridiculous market for this off-season. Wow...what a bunch of clowns. I hate to break it to Calgary, but acquring Hudler and Wideman ain't gonna make your team THAT much better.

My predictions for where Parise and Suter end up:

Parise - 65% (New Jersey) / 25% (Pittsburgh) / 10% (Minnesota)
Suter - 80% (Detroit) / 10% (Chicago) / 8% (Minnesota) / 2% (Nashville)
in reply to NortheastBlue15
Small/middle market team trying to win by the draft = Blues

If you want to get excited about signing a "big name" UFA or getting someone around the trade deadline, you should switch your rooting talents to Philly, Pitt, Wash, Bos, Tor, Det, LA, etc etc. I'm content being a Blues fan! I like "underdogs" who can make the playoffs and wreak havoc and not feel as much pressure as any of the teams I mentioned above.
in reply to lopey10
I go away for a bit and look what happens! Where to begin? In my lifetime as a Blues fan (1986 on), the Blues have gone to the Conference Finals twice. Have they won a Stanley Cup? Nope. They've been to the dance twice in their existence. When the Blues lost to the Wings in the late 1995-'96 in the second round, I think of that as the best Blues team I've ever seen. That team had seven hall of fame players (I expect that Pronger will make the HOF.)

Look, winning a Stanley Cup requires skill AND luck. If Grant Fuhr doesn't get knocked out of the playoffs by the Leafs, there's a good chance that they never lose to the Wings, etc. This team will win a Cup. I will be alive to see it. I'm nearly 40 years old.
in reply to Eggserino
in defense of casey he played really good in the series against the wings except that 1 play that shall remain unnamed. i thought he played good in relief of fuhr in the leafs series and then stepped it up against the wings. i remember thinking that if fuhr was in net we would not have gone to 7 games. that era of teams that the blues strung together were great but always the wings stepped in our way.

you are right winning a cup is skill combined with luck. we are close with this team. a couple of players learning to play harder and some more maturing and we could go real far.

i will never say we will win the cup just because its pointless. it's not up to me and my predictions. it's up to the players to learn from mistakes and get better.

HAPPY 4TH EVERYONE

johnny, that's a fair assessment. I thought Casey stood on his head against the Wings in a couple of those games. That shot that Stevie Y took was wired to the top corner. Not a lot of goalies stop that shot. flag this comment
yeah eggs if you have never played goal before. that shot should have been stopped and that is why it is the played that shall be unnamed. he flaked on that 1 play. the way i feel and i think most would agree, he stops that shot and we win the game, we had the cup that year. there was no other team that would have stopped us.
