Multiple Clubs Eyeing Gaustad
How often do we hear teams are looking for depth up the middle? Teams who are big at the center position normally have an advantage come playoff team.
Paul Gaustad’s name is starting to surface around the league as a pretty serviceable rental for the remainder of the year. There’s a chance Buffalo is active at the deadline and may look to unload a number of players. Gaustad would fit the bill for a several teams.
Sources say San Jose, Vancouver, Colorado, and Detroit are all possible destinations for Gaustad. More teams such as Toronto may surface as we move along.
At 30 years-old Gaustad is in the final year of a four year contract that pays him $2.5 million this season. Sources confirm talks between the club and the player have stopped and one can only assume the team is not interested in meeting the number he’s seeking. Whether or not he gets what he wants in the open market remains to be seen but more and more teams are taking a good look at the 6’5 center who’s widely considered one of the better face-off men in the Eastern Conference. He’s also a battler who could help a team in the playoffs.
The Sabres currently sit 13th in the East yet those close to the organization tell me they haven’t given up hope on making the playoffs.
Easy with the Nash Rumors….
We wrote several days ago that the Blue Jackets are not moving their Captain Rick Nash yet the rumors seem to continue. Sources close to the player remain consistent in saying he’s not leaving Columbus.
Same can be said with R.J. Umberger who’s also been rumored to be traded. I believe this was generated out of Edmonton of all places. Considering he just signed a five-year extension it’s more than safe to suggest he’s staying put.
We are likely to see some movement out of Columbus.
Salvador Enjoying Career Year…
At 36 years old New Jersey D-man Bryce Salvador is quietly having one of the best seasons of his long NHL career. He’s playing more than 20 minutes per game and is matching up against other teams best players. This guy wins one-on-one battles and is what you want in a shutdown D-man. After sitting out all of last season with a serious inner ear condition, Salvador looks fresh and will receive some interest should he become available on July first. He is not expected to be moved before the deadline. Salvador is playing in the fourth and final year of a contract that pays him $2.9 million per.
Same can be said for their Captain Zach Parise who will not be leaving New Jersey before July one at the earliest.
