Michael Ryder to Explore Free Agency

Jun 29

Jonathan Cheechoo received a mutual release from the San Jose Sharks and is trying to land a job with an NHL team. The former 50 goal scorer will likely have to settle for a two-way deal. Last season in Worcester he recorded 18 goals and 47 points in 55 games. He knows he needs to get faster and quicker which is why he’s hired a personal trainer and is working out twice a day at the University of Stanford. Representatives for Cheechoo have contacted several teams including the St. Louis Blues.

Ryder to be free…

You can expect Bruins sniper Michael Ryder to be a free agent on Friday. He saw his minutes decline in Boston once veteran Mark Recchi was brought on board. He showed in the playoffs what he’s capable of doing as he can still find the back of the net. I’m wouldn’t completely rule out a return to Boston but Florida may take a hard look as well. His point per minute ratio is rather impressive.

Ian White anyone?

I thought White looked good in San Jose but it appears he will not be returning to the Sharks.

Blues looking at goaltenders?

Sure there are veteran guys like Marty Turco and Michael Leighton available but do they interest GM Doug Armstrong? Ray Emery is likely looking to be a number one and Jaro Halak is settled into that position for now. One thing Ty Conklin brought to the table was the ability to play the puck. I thought the Blues often had an easier time breaking the puck out of the zone when Conklin played as a goaltender with puck skills can help in this area. Playing the puck is not one of Halak’s biggest strengths.

Should the Blues target a goaltender that can play the puck?

I’m not sure a guy like Turco or Leighton would push Halak as one guy(Turco) is a true backup while the other has been a waiver goalie most of his career.  There are some other options out there, the question is will Armstrong look for a guy on a two-way or a one-way contract?

D’Ags….

There is no reason for Blues fans to get all worked up with the Matt D’Agostini situation. The guy has a very strong arbitration case and there’s a good chance he’d get north of $2 million as a reward. The Blues don’t want to pay that much. The sticking point in the negotiations was almost more about the term than the actual dollars. D’Agostini wants two years and the Blues were only offering one. If he was going to sign a one-year deal he wanted a salary closer to the $1.8-1.9 range. As of a few weeks ago the Blues were offering closer to $1.5. Now we will all sit back and see what his true value will be in free agency.

You can say all you want about the factors that contributed to the season D’Agostini had but at the end of the day the guy scored 20-plus goals in the NHL. The Blues, specifically Armstrong, knows this.

The team is not turning their back on this guy as the two sides will continue talking in hopes of getting a deal done. Obviously if a team gives D’Agostini what he’s looking for he’ll likely move on. Understandably so, the Blues want to pay him for his entire body of work, not just one year.

The Penguins did the same thing with Tyler Kennedy.

Would Blues fans have any interest in a Marty Reasoner or Jamie Langenbrunner?

Conklin's game last year enabled the Blues to make easy and leisure line changes.

While the other team was celebrating.......

When the Blues traded Palushaj for D'Ags I almost lost it. But this last season, he really showed that given the right opportunities, he can excel at the NHL level. I am hoping the Blues can reach a deal with him, but the price he wants is too high. I think you have to see more for him than one season. It's not like he's a rookie who finally broke out, he has to put another season like this last one together before anyone will be comfortable giving him that money/years.

jamie langenbrunner would definately be a great aquisition. he's been in the captain seat, has 16 years of experience (something the blues are currently lacking), and has won 2 stanley cups (one with dallas, and one with the devils). he's the kind of guy that can help guide our youth through the post season. david backes is definately the leader on the team, but add langenbrunner's leadership coupled with a veteran D-man and you have a team with a definite chance of making it to the playoffs on a consistent basis.

What were Langenbrunner's issues in NJ? Were there issues with the coach? Playing time? What role would Langenbrunner play on this team? Third line minutes? Would he be ok with that?

I wouldn't mind kicking the tires, but I'd want to make darn sure that we did our due diligence before signing him. Payne's a young coach. I'd want to make sure that we're not inviting problems... flag this comment
Langenbrunner had a career of mostly winning till last year where he went from a terrible team to a team that became terrible after his arrival. Brad Richards getting hurt didn't help much either. But he was one of the leaders in New Jersey that allowed that room to get out of hand after they signed Kovy to huge dollars.

So I think Eggs has a great point on doing due diligence with him. flag this comment
........as long as we can keep a healthy line-up, and halak competes at the level he did in the postseason with montreal. i truely believe that halak will pick it up this season....i mean we did have a ton of key injuries, and at times seemed like we were peoria playing nhl teams....kind of hard to play your best when the players in front of you are changing daily. look at the run he had at the beginning of the season, healthy line-up, 9 game winning streak. it seemed like that minnesota game ruined his confidence.....the whole teams confidence for that matter.....

To get rid of a Reasoner then bring him back into the roster is just a question a Langenbrunner couldn't sign as a free agent. Because, Blues can't afford a Langenbrunner. Questions why Boyes and Brewer were let go. Because they are trying to sale a franchise team that never won the stanley cup. If their salary cap is too high, the buyer will not come to the table. Us Blues fans are tired of putting up with bad player signings as the begining of the season it's "Whatever it takes" to the end of the season to become "Whatever". Chris Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk inked for the Blues could of been useful at the beginning of the season when we start off playing great then skate on thin ice in the middle of the season. Doug Armstrong isn't afraid to trade fan favorites, I just hope our new owner Tom Stillman n/a has deap pockets because Paul Kariya's retirement isn't going to give us a Stanley Cup parade down Market Street.
