Isles Set Deadline for Bailiey
For the New York Islanders to leak a Friday morning deadline for forward Josh Bailey to either sign or sit at home seems out of the ordinary.
Is here a deeper issue here? Certainly makes you wonder.
What has the NHL come to anyway when guys like Kyle Turris and Josh Bailey can’t come to terms on a freakin contract before training camp? In the case of Turris, you could argue his agent is trying to get his client traded to a better situation.
While all the fingers are being pointed at Islanders Owner Charles Wang and his apparent “sign by camp or else” policy, I’m told there’s been some friction between GM Garth Snow and Bailey’s agent Don Meehan for some time now.
Remember last season when the Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Evgeni Nabokov to a contract only to have the Islanders pluck Nabokov off waivers? This came after Meehan had sent out a memo asking NHL teams not to claim the Russian goaltender.
Snow did it anyway and eventually suspended Nabakov for refusing to report to the Islanders. The suspension basically prevented Nabokov from playing in the NHL last season.
There were even some rumblings of Snow going directly to Matt Moulson and around Meehan when things weren’t moving as fast as the team would have liked during his contract negotiations. Moulson eventually signed a 3-year extension.
For it to get this far where the organization is almost threatening a player to sign, it tells me things have probably gotten personal. For whatever reason there’s been a communication breakdown to where both sides have hit a roadblock. At the end of the day Bailey has no leverage coming out of entry level and may be best suited to try and work out a one-year deal and take the team to arbitration next summer.
If there was progress being made and Snow and Meehan were engaged in cordial, professional dialogue then it wouldn’t be necessary to throw out a sign or stay home ultimatum. Chances are Snow feels comfortable nowadays with core players like Moulson, Michael Grabner, Kyle Okposo, and John Tavares all locked up.
In other news free agent D-man Chris Campoli is working out with a junior team up in Ontario and continues to stay patient until he signs a contract.
