Hip Injury Ends Season for Islanders Mike Mottau

Dec 22

Islanders D-man Mike Mottau will miss the rest of the season with a hip injury that will require surgery.

It’s been a tough go for the veteran D-man who hasn’t played in several weeks after taking a puck to the eye in an earlier game against Atlanta. Mottau suffered blurred vision as a result of the injury but is expected to make a full recovery. Sources say he has regained about 90-95% of his vision up to this point.

Once Mottau was medically cleared to begin working out he began experiencing pain in his hip. An MRI revealed multiple issues including a tear that will force him to sit out the remainder of the year. He’s consulting with multiple Doctors and will have the surgery in the coming weeks. Mottau will have the entire off-season to recover and is expected to be fully healed by training camp next fall. There’s a decent chance he wears a shield for the remainder of his career.

Anyone notice D-man Keith Yandle is the Phoenix Coyotes leading scorer? He’s also a restricted free agent after this season and is set to receive a significant raise off of his current $1.3 million salary. Phoenix has indicated they would like to get something done but GM Don Maloney’s hands are tied until the new Ownership takes over. Coming off a 41 point season, Yandle is on pace for a 50 plus point campaign which will put him in a separate category. Yandle and the Coyotes will be paying attention to the upcoming contracts signed by other RFA D-men including Shea Weber, Jack Johnson, and Drew Doughty. Yandle is perfectly happy playing in the desert as he’s taken on a leadership role with the Coyotes while playing around 24 minutes a game.

Man, I'd love to have Tavares on the Blues. Give them Boyes, Brewer (come full circle), and two 1st round picks. I know....I'm REALLY dreaming b/c it would never happen for various reasons. But still....Tavares with Oshie and Backes on a line? YIKES!

It's nice to have good dreams every once in a while. Just wait the kid will be begging to go play somewhere else soon enough. Or he'll take all the money he can. I actually like Taylor Hall more. That kid is something super special. He's a winner not to mention elite skill set. Speaking of Oilers and dreams...Eberle and the two Swedes are sweet as well. Wish there was somehow we could have snuck that pick away from Edmonton. Take heart though; I think both Schwarzt and Terasenko are going to be tremendous additions. Then at the very least we'll see Boyes no higher than a third liner unless he rediscovers his game and that he's not playing in a no-check league. flag this comment
Ha! No check league is right. More like he needs bumpers on the ice (like they do in bowling for beginners) so that his shot is steered on net. Even his goal last night was a flub. I don't know what's gotten into this guy, but man has he lost it all or what? You'd figure that a guy that can stick-handle like he does, he should be able to create enough space to shoot the puck. He DID have a nice inside-out move in the 2nd period last night from the video highlights. He didn't score, but at least he made something of nothing for once. flag this comment
I wish. Tavares is the only positive thing on Long Island right now. If he goes, you might as well move the team to Quebec City. flag this comment
Yandle probably likes playing in the "desert" too...

Wow! How original that someone critiques Andy's editing skills. Please, stick around for all of the other errors that Andy makes. You might even be able to start a blog of your own... flag this comment
Is there any way to convince Tarasenko to come over now?!
in reply to Eggserino
We know that's a no but what about next year? flag this comment
Can I just say how lucky that that Mike Babcock is that he followed Dave Lewis and Scotty Bowman. These guys are a treat to watch, laying down their sticks in the neutral zone to keep passes from going through. Seriously?! And we can't find anyone to score goals?!

Andy, any updates on Perron and/or McDonald?
