Goalie Decision Looming/Steen Ready?
The Blues could receive a boost tonight as Alex Steen has been taken off IR.
I was told there’s a decent chance Steen, who’s been out with a sore shoulder, returns tonight. An official decision will be made prior to the game.
This would certainly help the power play along with stabilizing things up front.
T.J. Oshie remains day to day with bruised ribs. He will not play tonight.
If Oshie were to miss a significant time the Blues could always reroute back to Jason Arnott. Several players were impressed with Arnott who skated with the team last week. There’s one other team who recently reached out to Arnott as well.
There’s a decent chance Vladimir Tarasenko returns before Andy McDonald. Both players are back skating but a McDonald return doesn’t appear imminent.
The uncertainty surrounding the injured players is one reason the Blues could end up hanging on to Chris Stewart beyond the trade deadline. Even after they return there’s no guarantee they stay in the lineup.
Goalie Decision Looming...
The Blues will need to make a decision on carrying three goaltenders once they get McDonald and Tarasenko back. Assuming Oshie is back, the team will go over the maximum 23 players allowed on the roster. They can send Adam Cracknell back to Peoria but will still need to make one more move. I don't get the sense the Blues want to risk losing Chris Porter thru waivers which means one of the goalies will likely have to go. Of course one or two more injuries changes everything which is why NHL GM's operate on a day to day basis.
Jake Allen is once again in net tonight. He and Ottawa goalie Ben Bishop have a great relationship and Bishop recently called Allen congratulating him on his fast start. Both goalies, along with Detroit's Jimmy Howard, skate together in the Summer in Maine with up and coming goalie coach Dave Alexander.
