Florida Re-Signs Clemmensen...Plus Quick Numbers

Jul 1

The Panthers have come to terms on a two-year contract extension with goaltender Scott Clemmensen. Jose Theodore also remains under contract as the club also has interest in trading for Roberto Luongo.

Quick Numbers...

Sources confirm the 10-year contract between Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings will pay the Conn Smythe winner $49 million over the first seven years of the deal. He'll be paid $7 mill each of the first seven seasons. The additional $9 million will be spread out of the final three years.

Quick will not be receiving any signing bonus money.

Langenbrunner, Blues still have yet to comes to terms...

The Blues have made an offer but it looks like both sides will keep talking.

Salvador Update...

I don't anticipate Bryce Salvador signing right off the bat. Sources close to the player tell me he will wait to see how rosters shape up before agreeing to a deal.

Big Payday in Buffalo...

The Sabres are writing some hefty checks today in signing bonus money...

Tyler Myers $10 million

Christian Ehrhoff $5 million

Ville Leino $4 million

Be sure to check back for frequent updates...

More to come,

I'm not sure what the asking price is for Keith Yandle, but I believe it's something like a current top-6, another NHL-ready body, and a high prospect. I'd say from the Blues perspective,....here's an interesting package:

Stewart, McRae, 2013 2nd round pick, 2014 third round pick

IF...(and this is for the fun of it)...if it were to go down, here would be our lines (provided we also resign Langs):

McDonald - Backes - Oshie
Perron - Berglund - Steen
Dags - Sobotka - Tarasenko
Langenbrunner - Nichol - Reaves

Crombeen
Schwartz
Grachev
Hensick

Yandle - Pietrangelo
Shattenkirk - Jackman
Polak - Russell

Cole
Fairchild
Ponich

Can Yandle and Petro coexist? That has the potential to really affect Petro's offensive numbers... If I'm Alex Pietrangelo, I would feel like I am not playing to my potential if I am stuck playing back while the other guy is rushing the puck or engaging offensively. If I'm Yandle, I'm thinking the same thing.

I know that Yandle is a great great player. Unless we trade Shattenkirk and acquire two stay-at-home types or a guy who is much stronger on the d-side of the game...

I just don't see how having Yandle and Petro playing together is a good thing for both of these players. I know y'all will call me crazy. A pack does not have two alpha males. It doesn't work. flag this comment
Pronger - MacInnis
Pronger - Niedermeyer
Stevens - Neidermeyer
Lidstrom - Rafalski
Weber - Suter

All of those combos ended up working out all right. Still not saying that you'd want to take away Petro's or Yandle's offensive capabilities if one or the other feel the necessity to hang back to play defense. HOWEVER,....it's also short-sighted to suggest that we need all the offense from either of those guys that you can get. It's about chemistry and the overall health of the team. Either guy could pick their spots to help "pitch in" offensively, but I'd rather they both stop the other team's efforts to score. Afterall, that's what being a defenseman is all about.

I'd argue that, in every one of those situations, except Weber - Suter, teams were dealing with established, veteran players. Yes, Pronger was younger, but MacInnis was well established and was grooming him at the time that they played together. If you look at Weber - Suter's numbers, Suter was your stay at home. Besides, Weber - Suter are much different players than Yandle - Petro. Both Weber and Suter are considered very solid in the d-zone. Yandle has been called a defensive liability. flag this comment

oy vey!!!

Well, as expected....the Blues will be financially responsible. Nothing wrong with that,...just that we're not making any splash this off-season. Woywitka was it. flag this comment
