Detroit Interested in Ty Conklin?

Feb 7

Ty Conklin has played some strong hockey in the two games since the All Star break. Sunday afternoon he started his third consecutive game for the first time this season and looks to be establishing some rhythm. This is good timing for the veteran goaltender who the Blues will certainly try to move at the trade deadline. Sources tell me the Blues have already made the determination that they will not re-sign the soon to be 35 year old.

Sources indicate the Blues have had conversations with the Detroit Red Wings who appear to have some interest with the return of Chris Osgood still unclear. Osgood underwent sports hernia surgery on January eleventh and is expected to start skating before the February 28th trade deadline. There is still no guarantee the Stanley Cup winner returns to action this season even though Osgood is confident he’ll be back before the playoffs.

The Red Wings would like to add some insurance at the goaltending position to protect themselves at the very least. We all know they struck out on Evgeni Nabokov who they signed a few weeks ago only to lose on waivers to the New York Islanders. Speaking of Nabokov, wouldn’t it make sense to join the Islanders to give himself a chance to be moved at the deadline?

Detroit obviously knows Conklin who carried the load two years ago when Osgood went down with a different injury. There is some comfort on both sides.

The Blues understand Conklin isn’t expected of bring back much in terms of return value but they might as well take what they can get if they aren’t keeping him beyond this year.  The Red Wings scouted the Blues victory over Edmonton last Friday and witnessed Conklin’s 29 save performance.

Conklin turned aside 36 shots in Sunday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Tampa Bay.

The Blues would turn to former third rounder Ben Bishop to backup Jaroslav Halak if/when Conklin is moved.

I'd let him walk as a UFA and get nothing in return before I'd do anything that might help the Red Wings.

Especially since they'll get next to nothing for them. The upside would be all Detroit's.

It's not helping the Wings. It's sabotage. flag this comment
If I could somehow be assured that all of Detroit's final games came down to shootouts, I could be talked into it....... flag this comment
You simply cannot help Detroit. It's unacceptable. flag this comment
"Speaking of Nabokov, wouldn’t it make sense to join the Islanders to give himself a chance to be moved at the deadline?"

Wouldn't he have to clear waivers before being eligable for a trade? I thought that was the case. If so, there is no point in him playing for the Islanders if he doesn't want to. Except, if he wants to play next year in the NHL, he needs to prove he is not just a big baby who pouts when he doesn't get exactly his way.

You're correct. He's currently suspended as well so if he ever wants to play in the NHL again he'll have to play for the Islanders at some point. WHich is why the Blues should send it in right now and look to draft a goal scorer. TRADE Brewer!!! flag this comment
He has a no trade clause, and his wife just had a baby. Even if the Blues do want to trade him, which I don't think that they do, it will most likely be difficult getting him to waive his no trade clause. flag this comment

Andy, come on. Whatever return the Blues could get for Conklin is NOT worth losing him for the playoff push. If we had to use Bishop these last two games we probably would have had 0-1 points rather than 3. He isn't ready, and Conklin is JUST what the Blues need behind Halak. We aren't going to get Datsyuk in return, and no return is worth losing Conklin for the rest of the season. The season isn't over, and he has already proved to be invaluable for the push...don't just trade him away because you can.

They signed Halak to play these games down the stretch...his back injury was never considered serious....secondly, Ben Bishop will likely be the backup next season...I have confidence in Bish if he's forced to play some games. flag this comment
look I love the Blues as much as any devoted fan but you have to be realistic, the odds of them making the playoffs at this point are slim, and yeah Conklin has his moments but even if we get a late pick for him it is better than nothing after all we might get that diamond in the rough late pick that turns into a star. I wish Conklin the best but he is the first of many that need to move on from the Blues so that we may be a contender and no longer a pretender. flag this comment
can this locker room be able to handle losing a Vet, especially one who is such a professional, when they are struggling as it is with so many young guys? this season is starting to look like a lost cause, it might help Bishop for next year by playing a little, but if they are thinking about the future, i would rather have Conklin around to help the team out in ways Bishop can't flag this comment
Besides Bishop Jake Allen has been dominant this season. Looks like his crappy play at the WJC last year woke him up as it did Cole a couple of years ago.

There's enough veteran presence in the locker room. We have a lot of veterans who aren't doing a good job leading this team from the get go. A lot of these younger kids show more hunger as it is.

Get a high pick, trade what you can and hope for the best. Next year we'll be much improved as far as skill and heart on the wings. We got screwed by injuries this year and still it would have been tough anyway with the lack of scoring depth. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THREE SCORING LINES TO COMPETE IN THIS LEAGUE. NOT two and a third. Our young defensemen look great as well. flag this comment
It would be ideal to get a second team thirsty for Conklin as he is about as good a backup as you could ever want. I too am not to enthusiastic to aid DET in there run in the playoffs but getting a second bidder involved could possibly enhance the quality of the return for Conks.

Speaking of sending guys out of town... Wouldn't Andy McDonald look goood in a B's uniform?
in reply to Eggserino
Except the Blues think he looks better in a Blues uniform flag this comment
Trying to create a ground swell Andy! Not trying to say the the Blues are going to trade him (Eklund has it as an E3...) flag this comment
B's probably don't even have cap space... flag this comment
Or are you try to protect top secret negotiations? Come on, Andy... what are you hiding? btw- how's that new baby? flag this comment
So, is it because this is an outside media source for the Post Dispatch that, if anyone says anything here they'll take it as a real rumor? I hear the Blues are planning on moving the team to Porcupine Plain, Saskachewan.
