Blues Sign Veteran Colin White to PTO
The St. Louis Blues have signed veteran D-man Colin White to a professional tryout. The Blues are searching for depth as they look to solidify the left side of their Defense.
White, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, played last season in San Jose after spending the majority of his career in New Jersey.
The Blues also kicked the tires with Chris Campoli, who may have been a better option, but the 28 year old was reluctant to attend camp without a contract.
For now Kris Russell is getting the first crack at playing with number one D-man Alex Pietrangelo although he's probably best served with Roman Polak. These two played very well together last season and if the coaching staff had it their way they'd probably prefer to keep them together.
Former first round pick Ian Cole is in the mix but the organization is looking for him to show the necessary strides to become a fulltime NHL player.
Veteran Jeff Woywitka is obviously provides some depth on the back end of their defense.
Jamie Langenbrunner is one player who pushed for Doug Armstrong to bring White into camp. They have championship history together and a relationship going back to their days with the Devils.
White has always carried a reputation as a rugged, warrior-like D-man. He isn't the answer to play 20-plus minutes with Pietrangelo but certainly gives the team added depth. At 35 years old he's no longer the player he once was but he remains serviceable.
I'm told White, who's been skating in New Jersey with the Devils during the lockout, had multiple PTO options.
One can safely assume Armstrong is still banging the phones in an effort to upgrade his roster.
