Blues Set to Name New Captain
The St. Louis Blues will hold a 10:00 am press conference Friday morning to announce the new team Captain as well as the Alternate Captains for the upcoming season.
David Backes is the leading candidate to be named the 20th Captain in franchise history. He meets every quality you would want in a Captain with his ability to lead on and off the ice.
Handing Backes over the “C” won’t prevent other veteran players such as Barret Jackman, Alex Steen, Jason Arnott, and Jamie Langenbrunner to step up and allow their voice to be heard when necessary.
Having a Captain gives the Blues an identity and I can’t think of a better player to represent the franchise than Backes. He’s entering the prime years of his career as well as the first season of a brand new five-year extension. When you look around the division, Johathan Toews, Rick Nash, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Shea Weber all do an outstanding job of representing their individual franchises. Backes would do the same in St. Louis
He also appreciates the history of the Blues and would continue the tradition of some of the great leaders who have worn the “C” in the past. Inside the Blues dressing room hangs a plaque with the names of every Captain the Blues have had. From Sutter, Federko, Hull, Corson, Gretzky, Pronger, MacInnis, Drake, and Brewer, the Blues have certainly had some great players and people represent the organization.
As long as Backes is the Captain, I would anticipate Jackman and Steen both to be named assistants. Both these players have been here for several years and have earned the respect of their teammates as well as the fans. The team could choose to rotate the assistants or have different players sport the “A” at home and on the road.
Eric Brewer was named Captain in February 2008 and held onto the “C” until the time he was traded to Tampa Bay last season.
